Two fabulous oils I’ve yet to cover are Sunflower and Safflower Oil. I love these oils for cleansing. Why? They are high in Linoleic Acid which makes them great for all skin types i.e. dry, oily and sensitive skin. Linoleic acid can also help oil and water mix so they are also more easily rinsed away. Where the oils differ is in their absorption ability so I use them differently depending on the type of cleansing.
Cleansing with Oils
If you’re in to natural skincare then you’ve probably heard about the benefits of the ‘Oil Cleansing Method’. And it’s all good – oil attracts oil so one of the best products you can use to remove impurities and stubborn makeup is oil. Yes, even for oily, problem skin. In fact, a lot of the super-duper makeup removers that don’t strip away your skin are heavily oil based. The downside is most of the commercial brands tend to be mineral oil based or contain PEGs which are manufactured water soluble oils made from an ‘ethoxylation’ process. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just prefer to avoid altogether in facial products and use plant oils.
The other thing I look for when cleansing with oils is how quickly it absorbs. Unlike nourishing facial oils I don’t want to use an oil that absorbs too quickly. The goal is to be able spend time massaging it on to your face to pick up dirt and grime rather than ‘poof’ - it’s gone. But I also don’t want something that is too thick or has slow absorbency as it will leave my face feeling like a greasy mess.
Calendula Infused Sunflower Oil - a precleanse makeup remover
Sunflower Oil is excellent for removing makeup. It is the great all rounder and high in vitamin e too. As a light, non-comedogenic oil with medium absorption ability, it feels wonderfully glidey and wipes off smooth, picking up every trace of makeup and grime along the way. I use organic sunflower oil infused with calendula for the added anti-inflammatory benefits that will also help heal, soften and soothe. But wait – there’s more: sunflower oil is also one of the least expensive oils you can buy and why the Drift Escentuals Calendula Infused Cleansing Oil retails at $15 a bottle. After all, you are literally ‘wax on, wax off’. No need for a costly, exotic oil. Save that for moisturising your face.
How do you use? Place a little oil in the palm of your hand then using your fingertips, massage all over face, including eyelids to remove mascara and make up. Grab some makeup pads and wipe off – viola! If you like, finish with a nice warm face cloth to remove any last traces.
Gentle Safflower Cream Cleanser - for everyday cleansing
I used to think my skin needed to feel squeaky clean to be clean. I’d try every ‘foaming’, ‘rinse off’, ‘oil free' cleanser and my skin would still suffer from blocked pores and break outs. That’s because I was stripping my skin of its natural oils instead of cleansing it. And by only rinsing, the dirt and product was never truly removed, so more blocked pores and on the cycle goes. Then, through my research and studies for Drift - I discovered cream cleansers. It was the best thing I ever did for my skin. Cream cleanser in the shower – rinse and wipe off with a face cloth. No more blocked pores. Hello clear, smooth skin.
The reason I use organic safflower oil in all the Drift Escentual Cream Cleansers is because it is a light, non-comedogenic, glidey oil that doesn’t absorb too quickly and is suitable for all skin types.
That pretty much covers all my favourite oils. Are there any oils I haven’t covered that you’d like to know about? Feel free to share any comments or questions.
