Mad about the Boy

Wish your man had skin like this? Why not treat him to a relaxing Drift Facial.

Here are 4 quick facts that give a nod to some male character traits as well as their skin.

1. Men have thicker skin

It's the testosterone.  It gives men facial hair and also more collagen which makes their skin about 20% thicker than women.  Then as we age, we start losing collagen and our skin begins to thin.  For men this happens at a constant rate of approx. 9% every 20 years.  For women this rate escalates up to 20% around menopause and then slows right down again.  Age does catch up with us all.  However for women it happens much faster than for men.

2. Men can be slick

It’s the testosterone again.  This causes men to produce more sebum, so their skin tends to be oilier and shinier than women.  More sebum also results in larger, more noticeable pores.  Greater sebum production also means greater chance of congestion as oil gets trapped in the pores and around hair follicles.  The plus side of this is men are less likely to have dry skin and is most why they rarely reach for a moisturiser.  I do stress less likely as I have equally as many male clients with dry skin as those with oily skin - mostly due to lifestyle and being exposed to dry air, salt water and sun.

3. Men get better with age

With their own built in moisturising system and gradual loss of collagen, it makes sense that men seem to ease in to aging, whereas for women it feels like wrinkles just appear overnight.  But before male readers gloat, as Rachel Hunter famously said all those years ago “It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen”.  When the wrinkles do appear, they will be more pronounced and fully grooved on men.
Here's a flashback for those too young to remember the Pantene ad.  Loving the Kiwi accent.

4. Men can be sensitive too

Every time a man shaves he is exfoliating his face.  The top layers are literally shaved away leaving fresh, baby soft skin.  Just like exfoliating, too much of a good thing can lead to irritations and more sensitive skin, especially if not done correctly.  Tips to avoid razor burn and sensitivities are:
  • Always use a sharp razor.
  • Don’t use a foaming gel – it raises the hair follicles through sensitising ingredients.
  • Apply a light moisturiser directly after to nourish and nurture freshly shaved skin.

So what does mean for your man?

There is no time like the present to introduce your man to a simple skincare routine.  Especially before signs of aging start to show.  A Drift Facial is a great way to do this.  Here’s why:
  • His skin will be correctly diagnosed along with tips for a simple, no fuss home routine.
  • It will take place in a private setting, not an intimidating ‘beauty salon’.
  • His facial will be specifically created for his skin – no girly fluff or fragrances.
  • Every facial is a relaxing experience, focusing on massage and not application of lots of product to deliver results.
To celebrate Fathers Day, any facial booked or voucher purchased by Sunday 6th September will also include a FREE 500ml Drift Escentuals Hand & Body Wash or Drift Escentuals Refreshingly Light Body Cream, valued at $35 to kick start his routine.  Although not specifically created for men, the uplifting scent and light feel has been a huge hit with the male folk.  The body wash they like to use all over (hair, face, body) and the body cream as a facial moisturiser.
