Allantoin is my go-to cosmeceutical for dry skin that is in need of love and protection.
What is allantoin?
It is a natural chemical compound mostly found in the comfrey root or animal urine. In more traditional times, these natural forms were used to heal wounds, relieve burns and treat fractures. Today, it is mostly synthetically derived to mimic the natural form and is used as a natural soothing skin protectant that can help improve the moisture content of the skin.
How does it work?
Allantoin has 2 main actions when applied to the skin:
- It is keratolytic, meaning it is able to thin the excess build-up of keratin and therefore soften the skin.
- It encourages cell regeneration that helps heal and improve the condition of the skin.
